Crop and straighten
Crop to a print size, rotate, flip, and level a crooked horizon.
Open the Crop and straighten panel to change the shape of a photo. Your original is never changed; the crop is saved with your edit like any other change.
Which plans include it
Cropping, rotating and flipping come with Nest and above. Straightening, including the horizon tool, comes with Flock and above. On Nest the straighten controls are locked and tell you which plan has them. You can still crop, rotate, flip and save.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Storage | Adds |

Crop to a shape
- In the editor, click Crop and straighten, or press the C key.
- Under Shape, choose how the crop should look.
- Drag the frame to move it. Drag a corner to resize it, or use the arrow keys to nudge it. The part outside the frame is dimmed.
- Click Apply crop.
The shapes are:
- Free: any shape you like.
- Original: the photo’s own shape.
- Square 1:1.
- Print sizes: 4×6 (2:3), 5×7, 8×10 (4:5), 11×14, Journaling card 3×4 and Wallet 2.5×3.5.
A print shape keeps the frame at that shape while you resize it, so the photo fits the paper without white edges or surprise trimming. Use Swap portrait and landscape to turn the frame on its side. Press X for the same thing. It does nothing for Free and Square 1:1.
A crop can’t be smaller than 64 pixels on its short side.
Rotate and flip
Under Turn and flip:
- Rotate left and Rotate right turn the photo a quarter turn. Press R to rotate right, or Shift + R to rotate left.
- Flip horizontally and Flip vertically make a mirror image.
While the panel is open you see the whole photo, turned and flipped, with the crop frame on top.
Straighten
Straightening comes with Flock and above.
- Move the Straighten slider to tilt the photo up to 45 degrees either way.
- Or choose Draw the horizon and drag along a line that should be level, such as the horizon. We work out the tilt for you.
Straightening turns the photo a little, so the crop stays inside the picture and you don’t get empty corners.
Keys
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
| C | Open the panel |
| R | Rotate right |
| Shift + R | Rotate left |
| X | Swap portrait and landscape |
| Enter | Apply the crop and close the panel |
| Esc | Drop your changes in the panel |
Every key except Esc does nothing while you type in a box or use a slider. Esc drops your changes wherever you are. Enter only works when a button isn’t selected. Apply crop doesn’t save the photo; press Ctrl or Cmd + S, or click Save, when you’re done. Reset crop clears the panel, and Cancel crop closes it without changes.
Good to know
Applying a crop is one step you can undo. See Undo, save and revert. Red-eye circles and the other tools keep working after you crop. See Red-eye and sharpening, and Compare plans.
